Here’s your June Tuesday Tip

Take a good hard look in the baggage claim mirror

Operating an airline with all its myriad moving parts is incredibly complex- so much so that it’s easy and tempting to consider a flight over once it parks at the gate.

For those passengers who had to check their bags however, one obstacle remains…how much of an obstacle depends on your and your checked baggage procedures. Sure it might seem inconsequential, but I can tell you from boarding to bopping around baggage claim, checked luggage was often a very touchy subject.

Mirror mirror on the wall, how do we handle baggage best for all?

  1. RIFD is here to save the day: Implement advanced baggage handling systems that utilize barcode or RFID technology to track and trace bags throughout the entire journey. This enables real-time monitoring, reduces the risk of mishandling, and improves overall efficiency- helpful, happy, non-frazzled baggage employees are a nice bonus.

  2. Automation is also here to save the day: Utilize automated sorting systems that can quickly and accurately direct bags to the correct flights. This minimizes the chances of misrouted or delayed luggage.

  3. Streamline the check-in process: Simplify the check-in process by offering online or mobile check-in options. Then, make it so simple and easy for passengers to input their baggage details in advance they can’t cop out and “just do it at the airport”. Anticipatory info such as the number of bags to be checked reduces the chance of errors during manual tagging.

  4. Train it to bag it: Provide comprehensive training to baggage handling staff, emphasizing the importance of careful handling and accurate routing of bags. This includes proper use of equipment, loading techniques, and effective communication to prevent mishandling…which again, can be brought about if your baggage staff isn’t drowning in misplaced luggage.

  5. Give your PAX the power: Offer passengers the ability to track their bags in real-time through mobile apps or online platforms. This provides transparency and reassurance, allowing passengers to know the status and location of their luggage.

  6. Make Friends with partner airlines: Establish effective partnerships and agreements with partner airlines to ensure bags get to where they need to go- also make sure you reciprocate.

  7. Consider some summertime deals: Listen, your checked baggage fees are ultimately at your discretion, but considering the insanity that is summer travel, it might be a nice opportunity to consider some kind of baggage promotions. Deals on waived or reduced fees could have the dual benefits of drumming up some extra business, while making the lives of your baggage team and ultimately your passengers waiting to reunite with their bags, easier.
