Tip Tuesday- Efficiency across the board

Welcome to another Tip Tuesday, where we unravel insights into enhancing the passenger experience and ultimately improve your bottom line. Today’s focus: revolutionizing the airline boarding process. A well-executed boarding procedure not only sets the tone for a positive journey for your customers but is also a critical domino that can impact singular flights but also flight schedules as a whole. Let’s explore practical tips to streamline and improve the boarding experience for both airlines and passengers.

  • Implement Digital Boarding Passes: There will always be die-hards who need the feel of a paper boarding pass in hand, but the more passengers you can get to download a digital pass the better. Not only does this reduce paper waste but it also expedites the boarding process and saves on ink and paper costs. It also frees up check-in staff and gate agents to attend to more important matters like prepping boarding areas and effectively communicating throughout the boarding process.
  • Prioritize Pre-boarding: Streamline the process by prioritizing pre-boarding for passengers with special needs, families with young children, and frequent flyers. This shows you care, puts a vulnerable passenger population at ease, and in giving those who needs it a little extra time, ultimately makes sure everyone has enough time to get settled down a clear, non-congested aisle.
  • Invest in Automated Boarding Gates: Leverage technology to its fullest by investing in automated boarding gates. Automated systems can scan boarding passes and passports swiftly, reducing the time spent on manual checks and ensuring a smooth flow of passengers through the gate, plus you’ll save on staffing needs and human errors.
  • Encourage Early Seat Selection: Encourage passengers to select their seats during the booking process. This allows for better planning and organization, as well as the opportunity to identify and address seating issues before the boarding begins- I can’t tell you (and Jordan will back me up here) how many times the boarding process was slowed or stopped altogether because passengers tried to maneuver their seats at the last minute. This might mean waving fees if parents are travelling with small children, or offering price breaks for seat selection if a particularly large party wants to sit together. This would help to encourage seat selection prior to boarding and the deal you offer will pay for itself thanks to a clear and efficient boarding that led to a flight pushing back on time.
  • Communication is Key: Keep passengers informed about boarding progress through clear and timely announcements. Clear communication helps manage expectations, reduces stress, and enhances the overall passenger experience. Communication is also crucial between gate agents, pilots and flight attendants. Make sure all 3 have a means to talk to one another throughout the board process to get a proactive handle on last minute passengers with special needs, overhead bin space, and any issues such as seat duplications, etc.
